Prime Pigs sell to 141p/kg and £140

The dedicated sale for Prime Pigs saw, perhaps, one of the best show of both quality and quantity of prime pigs for quite some time with new customers in attendance, both buying and selling.

The sale commenced with cull sows which sold to £140 and 66p/kg for a Large White x Gloucester Old Spot from Mrs W Stamper, Chipping.

Prime Pigs sold to £130 for a Pietrain x gilt from PK & R Woof, Kendal who also sold Saddleback x Pietrain gilts at £130. New Vendors D & E Monk, Bispham sold the best of their White gilts at £126 and £120 with boars achieving £114. Hoggs sold to £122 from J Stott Jnr, Stainton. Lighter weight pigs from C & J Bennett, Preston sold to £98 with others to £95 from NJ Wilkinson, Barrow in Furness.

Top price this week was 141p/kg for a pen of 4 White gilts from D & E monk who sold other gilts and boars regularly 125p/kg – 135p/kg. Lightweights sold to 120p/kg from C & J Bennett, Preston with heavy weights 116p/kg from J Stott Jnr, Stainton.

All pigs forward today averaged 116p/kg.

Spring Lambs

The weekly sale of Prime Lambs had an entry of 1270 forward selling to an overall market average 173p/kg. Once again, there was strong demand for best quality light and heavy weight lambs today. Topping the market at £96 were Texels from WS Burrow & Sons, Silverdale. This was closely followed by Suffolks selling to £93 from D Metcalfe, Dalton in Furness. Other Suffolks sold to £89.50 from Helen Newton, Low Levens. Also achieving this price was D Black, Milnthorpe with Dorsets. Plenty of heavy weight lambs sold in the mid to late eighties. Beltex lambs sold to a top of £87 or 207p/kg (twice) from JG & PH Thompson, Selside. Which were purchased by Plumgarths Farmshop. There are more lambs starting to come onto the market now that saw a pen of 44kg Mule lambs from BD Gill, Ingleton sell to £74.

Cast Sheep

There was a bumper entry of cast sheep forward this week of 962 which were met by plenty of demand ringside for the upcoming festival. Topping the market this week was a pure Texel ewe from PK & R Woof, Stainton selling to £160. Beltex ewes sold to a top of £125 from AR & C Fawcett, Seascale with Suffolk ewes selling to £124 DM & D Cook, Ulverston. Plenty of Suffolk and Continental ewes sold around the £90 mark. Mule ewes sold to a top of £85 from WI & A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale with plenty of pens of big strong Mule ewes selling around the £80 mark. Hill bred ewes saw best Cheviots sell to £85 from D Metcalfe, Dalton-in-Furness. Horned ewes saw Scottish Blackfaces sell to a top of £67 from JW & TE Sharp, Lyth. Swaledale sold to £58 from the same good home and Rough Fells sold to £55 from CP Bateman, Croft Foot. There was a leaner offering of ewes today but these were accommodated by feeding men.
